Rainbow Six: Vegas

Platform: Xbox 360
Publisher: Ubisoft
Review Type: Touchy
Version: Demo

I don't mind admitting that I'm a little scared of tactical shooters. This comes from the knowledge that I'm merely decent at Halo. By that logic, I must be therefore be bad or even terrible at a shooter that's any more complicated or difficult. Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter proved my fears to be real. I wrestled with the controls, constantly misplacing my aerial support and losing my team to enemy fire. Full Spectrum Warrior didn't give me any trouble, but that's because the game was practically turn based -- the enemies pretty much waited for you to position yourself and take them down.

I wouldn't have had an iota of interest in Rainbow Six: Vegas if I hadn't seen the game on an episode of the 1UP Show. Their preview made the game look easier to wrangle. And it is.

The downloadable demo on Xbox Live Marketplace begins with my group of three gunmen being airlifted to the roof of a Las Vegas hotel that has been taken over by terrorists. As I moved through the indoor/outdoor hotel construction site, I quickly learned the ins and outs of taking cover, bossing my teammates around and using my gadgets.

Before I knew it I'd built my way up to breeching doors and clearing rooms. And then, as quick as you please, I had my sights on a hostage situation. My team was positioned at one doorway. I'd crept through the shadows to take the scene on with my own eyes. One thug had his gun against the head of a lady news reporter, the other filmed the gruesome scene with a video camera. The tension was escalating. I couldn't wait a moment longer. With a button I gave the order. My allies stormed the door. I zoomed in and took the primary terrorist out with a head shot, then laced the camera man with bullets.

Only twenty minutes in and I'm already a hero. Call me crazy, but that's the way I like to start playing a game.
